BERKELEY SENIOR CENTER
The original Berkeley Senior Center was the former cafeteria of the High Street School. The Berkeley County Board of Education leased the school in 1971. In 1976, the Berkeley County Commission purchased the school from the School Board, continuing its use as a Senior Center. In 1979 the Adult Day services program began. In 1994, the Berkeley County Commission, with the endorsement of the City of Martinsburg, applied for and received a Small Cities Community Development Block Grant to expand and renovate the Senior Center. The Berkeley Senior Services Board conducted a Capital Campaign to raise the remaining funds. With the help of the WV legislature, Governors Caperton and Underwood, contributions were received from businesses and individuals. The High Street School was demolished in 1996. The "new” Berkeley Senior Center was dedicated by the Berkeley County Commission and Berkeley Senior Services on December 11, 1998. Visit the website at www.berkeleyseniorservices.org
